RNE Model UN takes first place at UVA conference |
| Columbia, SC - October 31, 2005: The 41-member Richland Northeast High School Model UN
team took first place as Best Large School at the the University of Virginia Model UN
conference, held October 28-30. Approximately 400 students participated on teams from
across the country. "Our Model UN team has consistently posted extraordinary results at these competitions," said Ralph Schmidt, Richland Northeast's principal. "It's a tradition we can be proud of. A number of the delegates on this year's team are new to Model UN, making this a double achievement - not only did they get through their first competition but they helped their team win another first." Richland Northeast's team has a record of 16 straight first-place wins at the National Model UN conference, held annually in New York City later in the school year. "This is a very hard-working team," said Lynn Washington, faculty advisor to RNE's Model UN program. "We do many hours of research and preparation for these conferences, much of it on weekends. But they just dug in and came through beautifully." In addition to the overall award, 19 students received individual speaking awards:
