The weekend will kick off with a day of workshops and special screenings, followed on Saturday afternoon by the screening of the finalists in each category. Winners will be screened as part of the Nickelodeon Theatre’s Indie Grits Film Competition later in the month. “In just a short time, technical and creative capabilities you once found only in dedicated filmmaking programs and professional studios have become available to many high school students,” said Ralph Schmidt, principal of Richland Northeast High School. “Digital literacy is fast becoming a 21st century expectation in higher education and in the work force. IndieReels is an incentive for student filmmakers to further develop their skills while giving them a forum where they can see and learn from what other students are doing.” Student filmmakers currently in grades nine through twelve and residing in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia are invited to enter. Applications must arrive at RNE by February 1, 2008, and the deadline for submissions is February 20. Only the first 120 entries can be accepted. Finalists in each category will be screened at the IndieReels Festival, at which time the winners - one in each category - will be announced. More information is available online on the IndieReels Webpage, at http://www2.richland2.org/rnh/indiereels/. The winning film in each category in the IndieReels Festival will be shown during Columbia's Indie Grits Film Competition, which features work by professional and amateur filmmakers. “The calibre of the work submitted for last year’s IndieReels was just astonishing,” said Nancy Underwood, IndieReels artistic director and RNE film/visual arts teacher. “Who knew that our students had become so proficient with a camera and editing program?” For further information, see the IndieReels Web site at http://www.richland2.org/rnh/indiereels, send an e-mail to indiereels@gmail.com or call (803) 699-2800 ext. 2782.
