IndieReels® seeks teen filmmakers for 2009 festival

Columbia, SC:  The IndieReels® Festival for High School Filmmakers is seeking entries of short videos and podcasts for its 2009 competition. Applications for entry — available at www.richland2.org/rnh/indiereels — are due by December 16, 2008. The deadline for receipt of the completed film is January 9, 2009.

Sponsored by Richland Northeast High School, IndieReels will feature student works in five categories: documentary, comedy, drama, animation/new media, and podcast public service announcement (PSA topic: Teens Going Green). Screening will take place at 11 a.m. on Sunday, January 18, 2009, at Nickelodeon Theatre, 937 Main Street, Columbia.

The festival weekend will kick off with workshops and special screenings on Saturday, January 17, at RNE, followed on Saturday by the screening of the finalists in each category. Selected student works will appear in a special episode of “Southern Lens” on SC ETV.

Student filmmakers currently in grades nine through twelve and residing in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia are invited to enter. Only the first 60 entries can be accepted. Finalists in each category will be screened at the IndieReels Festival, at which time the winners — one in each category — will be announced. More information is available on the IndieReels Web page, http://www.richland2.org/rnh/indiereels/.

Since its start three years ago, IndieReels has gained a high profile among students and educators who are into film,” said Nancy Underwood, IndieReels artistic director and RNE film/visual arts teacher. “Filmmaking is almost second-nature to many creative teens — akin to what paper and charcoals were to me: a means of creative expression and communication. These kids are already changing the way short films are made and distributed. The goal of IndieReels is to nurture them and encourage their efforts.”
