In season of giving, RNE kicks off 2006 Hope for the Holidays community-service project

Columbia, SC: Richland Northeast High School has kicked off its 2006 Hope for the Holidays, an annual service project that benefits such local organizations as God’s Storehouse, the Family Shelter, Families Helping Families, Cooperative Ministry Homeless Shelter, and Camp Kemo. Throughout the month, RNE students will conduct a canned food drive, collect new small toys and products for care packages, raise funds to sponsor a child at Camp Kemo, and work to make the holiday season brighter for the community’s needy. Student co-chairs for Hope for the Holidays are Jasmine Sanders and Angelee Rizzo.

RNE students will be collecting donations in front of the Food Lion supermarket on Decker Boulevard on November 21 and 22 and during the first week of December. “The Food Lion has been a major community partner, allowing us to collect as often as our students are available,” said Kim Sanders, RNE’s Hope for the Holidays faculty sponsor. The drive ends on December 7, when donated items will be delivered to God’s Storehouse, the Cooperative Ministry, and the Camp Kemo office. Morris Furniture Warehouse, on Shop Road, has donated a truck and driver for the day.

In addition, the Richland Northeast Student Government is again involved in the Families Helping Families adoption project. Each first-period class is asked to “adopt” a family of four or more, committing at least $50 per family member for purchasing gifts. School clubs and faculty members also adopt families or individuals or make donations toward the adoption of a family. Last year, RNE adopted more than 130 families. This year, RNE students will also help man the Families Helping Families phones on November 28.

“At this time, we are seeking community businesses to join us in the Hope for the Holidays project,” said Kim Sanders, faculty sponsor. “In the past, a number of businesses have become our corporate sponsors.”

For information or to find out about becoming a community sponsor, please contact Ms. Sanders at ksanders@rnh.richland2.org or 699-2800 ext. 2822.
