RNE's GAP Choir sweeps National Gospel Choir Competitions in New York

This is the fourth year that the four-year-old group has entered this national competition, where it has consistently brought home major awards.

"I am thrilled with them," said Joyce Abel, RNE science teacher and the group's advisor. "This competition draws many outstanding choirs from throughout the country. To do so well in such a strong field says a lot about the abilities and dedication of these students."

GAP brought home trophies for:

Most Outstanding Male Vocalist - Andre Delaine
Most Outstanding Alto Soloist - Jasimen Williams
Most Outstanding Soprano Soloist - Jayna Martin
Most Outstanding Accompaniment - Rickey Johnson (percussionist and music director), Hamilton Grant (trombone), Alphonso Counts (saxophone), Richard Pearson, III (keyboard), Myron Williams (bass guitar)
Most Outstanding Keyboardist - Jonathan Carmicheal
Most Outstanding Student Director - Antwon Gleaton Most Outstanding Choreography
Most Outstanding Accompanied Selection
Most Outstanding Grand Processional
Most Outstanding Choral Attire
Most Outstanding Processional/Recessional
Most Outstanding Original Composition - "Have you Tried My Jesus," written by John Lakin (featured on the GAP Choir CD "GAP")
Most Outstanding Mime Team - Devia Robinson and Jeannine Buchanan

"GAP does more than hold its own against some heavy competition," said Ralph Schmidt, RNE's principal. "They excel. It's a reflection of talent, hard work, and determination. These students are one of our most popular performing groups, and for good reason."
