| Columbia, SC: For the fourth consecutive time in a row, Richland Northeast High School is among Newsweek magazine's 1,000 Top Public High Schools. RNE,
one of only two Midlands high schools and only twelve South Carolina high schools to appear among the top 1,000, finished this year with a score of 1.377
and a ranking of 894.
In 2006, the school was ranked 912. The list appears on the Newsweek Web site: www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18757087/?sort=State&count=1257&search=&start=900&limit=100&year=2007&. "This is a wonderful way to end the year," said Ralph Schmidt, RNE's principal. "We truly strive to encourage our students to reach further than their grasp. That means encouraging our college prep students to try an honors course and our honors students to take that next step to AP. We are not here to tell students what they cannot do - we’re here to help them find out how much they can achieve." Previously, Richland Northeast appeared on the 2003, 2005, and 2006 lists. Newsweek did not issue a list in 2004. Richland Northeast High School offers more than 30 Honors, pre-AP, and Advanced Placement courses in English, Math, Science and Behavioral Science, Social Studies, Foreign Languages, and Fine Arts. It also has the AVID program, a national initiative to prepare motivated college-preparatory students for Honors- and AP-level classes.
