You might find the next Chuck Close

Columbia, SC:  Prints by Chuck Close sell for tens of thousands of dollars at major galleries throughout the world. But when he was still Yale a student, you could have bought one for a small fraction of that at the school's annual art sale. Who knows? You might find the next hot young artist right here in Columbia, at the first annual Palmetto Center for the Arts Spring Art Auction of original paintings, drawings, mixed media, sculpture, ceramics, and photographs by former and current students in the Arts Visual Arts, Advanced Placement, and Talented and Gifted programs.

The auction will take place on Thursday, April 3, in the Richland School District Two Auditorium, 7500 Brookfield Road, Columbia, and includes a number of works recently featured at the Martin Gallery in Charleston.

Viewing begins at 5 p.m. Silent auction is 5:30-7:30, live auction begins at 6 p.m. Payment is by cash, check, or credit card. Information: Mary Catherine Newman, (803) 699-2800 ext. 2713.

At left: PCA Visual Arts senior Brian Smith works on an abstract painting, one of many works that will be available at Richland Northeast's PCA Spring Art Auction, to be held on April 3.
