- Thirteenth Annual Doctor Shot Basketball Camp at RNE
Dates: June 1012, 14 p.m.
Cost (includes t-shirt): $45 ($40 each for multiple family members) through May, $50 in June
Directed by Gary Fulmer and Jason Powell, the camp specializes in teaching the proper fundamentals of shooting to both boys and girls entering grades 2–9. The camp separates participants into groups by grade level and includes fun games and contests. Lowered baskets and smaller balls are used for the younger children. - Barry Mizzell Baseball Camp
Dates: Session I: June 912, Session II: June 1619, 8 a.m.noon
Cost: $65 per person, $120 for two family members
Blythewood High School will host two sessions of Barry Mizzell Baseball Camp at Blythewood Baseball Park. Barry Mizzell (Head Baseball Coach) directs the camp with assistance from his staff and players. Each session will include a Basic Fundamentals camp for ages 612 and an Advanced Pitching and Hitting camp for ages 913. The Basic Fundamentals camp is designed to improve your fundamentals in the game of baseball, with emphasis on catching, throwing, hitting, fielding, and baserunning. The Advanced Pitching and Hitting Camp will give pitching and hitting instruction for higher-level players, with emphasis on pitching mechanics, pitchers fielding techniques, pick-off moves, mental aspects, and the different pitches. Videotape will be used to analyze the individual campers. This camp is limited to the first 20 campers. Individual attention is a priority. - JAWS Swim Team at the JCC
JAWS Swim Team is open to swimmers of all levels and abilities between the ages of 4 and 18. Children practice on weekday mornings and afternoons; swim meets against local swim teams take place on Monday and Thursday evenings. This team is coached by WSI certified instructors who also have competitive swim experience. Cost: JCC Members: $60; nonmembers: $90; sibling discount available. - Three summer camps are available through the West Ashley Counseling Associates. Life Skills Camp (ages 518) teaches anger management, problem solving, self-esteem, and more to children with ADD/ADHA/ODD and Asperger. - The July 610 Broyhill Leadership Conference 2008 is open to rising 10th-grade through college-age students who are interested in personal development and leadership training. - The Sisters of Charity Providence Hospitals are sponsoring Pursuit, a two-week summer healthcare internship program for rising Juniors and Seniors. Students will receive a small stipend upon completion of the program. - The School-to-Work Transportation Careers Training Program has an eight-week paid summer internship for South Carolina students ages 1622. Applicants need a minimum 2.5 GPA, one letter of recommendation, and an official transcript. They also must write a one-page essay. If selected, they will work in a transportation-related agency, learn about careers and issues in the transportation industry, and keep a journal documenting their experience. - Sophomores and Juniors: if you want to study agribusiness and natural resources at Clemson University, you could be among the 3040 rising Juniors and Seniors across the state selected for a week (July 1925) of field-based experiments using extensive contemporary data analysis and application methods. The South Carolina Commissioner's School for Agriculture will be sponsoring interested students for only $250; scholarships are available for students with financial need. - South Carolina Business Week will be held this year from July 1318 at Presbyterian College. To be eligible for this practical study of the American private enterprise system, you must rank in the top third of your class and write a 250- to 500-word essay explaining what you hope to gain by attending Business Week and how you think this experience will give you a background for your future in the working world. - Wofford College and Milliken & Co. seek rising Seniors to participate in Summer Leadership Institute 2008 on the Wofford campus from June 21–28. There is no cost to the students. - Columbia College is holding three different leadership programs for girls this summer. Applications are available for the following in guidance:
- Lead 2008 is for rising sophomore and junior girls who demonstrate leadership potential. This week-long interactive residential workshop will be held June 2228 and will cost $600.
- Emerging Leaders is a program for ninth grade girls who want to expand their personal and academic success in high school. It will be held July 1317 on the campus of Columbia College and tuition is $500.
- Lead 4 is for junior and seniors girls who have previously participated in Lead or Emerging Leaders. This advanced program will further girls skills in conflict resolution, problem solving, decision making, team building and other communication skills.
- Pratt University has a pre-college experience on three of their campuses for high school students every summer. Students can pick from 20 credit bearing electives and earn college credits while living in New York City for the summer. Information: www.pratt.edu/ccps-precollege
- Furman University is offering one or two week engaged learning experiences for high school students on its campus in Greenville this summer called Summer Scholars. Room, board, field trips, and activities are all covered in the $800 a week cost. Each week has a different emphasis: such as Graphic Design, Theater, Writing about Film, Video for the Web, Psychology, Mock Trial, Wellness, Food and the Environment, French, and Spanish. - Ole Miss is looking for the brightest and best of the classes of 2009 and 2010 to participate in the 28th annual Summer College for High School students. - Juniors interested in public leadership in domestic and international arenas might qualify for a free week at Furman. The program, sponsored by the Richard W. - The Claflin University PRISM Program is recruiting for the 2008 summer academic program. 9th- through 11th-grade students interested in careers related to science and math are encouraged to apply. This six-week residential program (June 8July 12) includes an intensified summer curriculum, field trips, guest lecturers, and a required research project. - The Governor's School Summer Science Program (SSP) in Hartsville offers rising 8th-, 9th-, and 10th-graders their choice of three week-long camps (June 1521, June 2228, July 612) emphasizing field trips and hands-on lab work with professors from a variety of South Carolina colleges and universities as well as the school faculty. Courses include robotics, chemistry, crime scene investigation, heredity, ecology, marine and plant biology, entomology, amusement park physics, 3D video game creation, electronics, and Web-based gaming. To be accepted, students must have a proven interest and ability in science and mathematics, demonstrated through test scores and grades. Applications will be available March 1. - Any student interested in politics should consider attending one of the Junior Statesmen Summer Programs at Georgetown, Yale, Princeton, or Stanford during June and July. The cost of these three- or four-week sessions varies from $3000 to $4400. Details: Guidance Counselor
- Juniors interested in West Point: West Point will hold two week-long Summer Leaders Seminars for outstanding Juniors who want a better understanding of the academy's academic, physical, and leadership-development programs. Applicants must be in the top fifth of their class with strong PSAT scores and demonstrated leadership potential. Applications should be completed asap, but no later than March 31. West Point will notify applicants of their admission status by May 1 and reserves the right to schedule the attendees in either of the two sessions: June 713 or June 1420.
