Deadlines: what you need to do (updated 11/11/09)
- If you are interested in attending Midlands Technical College next year, you must take the ASSET or Compass placement tests. RNE will give the ASSET on December 1 at 8:30 a.m. Although the test is free, applying to Midlands Tech costs $35. The deadline to complete the online application and sign up for the ASSET is November 20.

General information: what you need to know

- GPA/class rank; update your four-year plan in terms of career focus or goal; make sure Guidance has your e-mail address
- Official transcripts (those that accompany college applications) must be mailed by Guidance directly to the college. The fee is $3.

- You need 24 credits to graduate:
- College Prep: check for academic electives, three lab sciences, and world language. Narrow choices to threefive colleges (including one sure thing and one stretch).
- Tech Prep: 1 CATE credit for graduationfour credits in one area to be a completer
- Testing
- SAT and subject tests: Check registration deadlines, test areas, and fees: www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/sat/calenfees.html.
- SAT II: competitive schools recommend three; good to take after AP testing
- SAT/ACT scores must be sent from the College Board or ACT regional office for admission to most colleges and universities
- ACT: (equal to SAT, but four sectionsEnglish, Math, Reading, Sciencewriting optional). Check registration deadlines and fees: www.actstudent.org/regist/currentdates.html.
- ASVAB (military)
- SCOIS Talent Search, Scholarship Board: do you want e-mail sent to you? Get SCOIS log-on information in Media Center.
Life Scholarship, $5000 for in-state four-year institution (must have two of these three): 3.0 GPA, 1100 SAT, top 30% of class.
Palmetto Fellows, $6700 for in-state four-year institution, $7500$10,000 for math/science majors from sophomore year on): 3.5 GPA, top 6% of class, 1200 SAT / 27 ACT or 4.0 GPA and 1400 SAT / 32 ACT (regardless of rank).
- Free tutoring:
- Afterschool (Monday–Thursday) 3:40–4:40 p.m.; see teacher or counselor for schedule
- During school hours in the Tutoring and Testing Center: see Judy Giles or Elaine Suddeth
- Importance of extracurricular activities and community service, appropriate conduct, respect
- Let Guidance know about all scholarship offers that you receive (even those that you do not plan to accept)ditto college acceptances

- Get applications from guidance, CIC, or college, or apply onlinedownload counselor portion
- Line up recommendations from teachers, employers, and others
- Provide stamped, addressed envelope for each college application, scholarship, and teacher's recommendation
- Type or print application in black ink; make a copy and keep it. If applying online, give counselor recommendation form
- Complete college application before giving to counselor with application fee and $2 transcript fee plus cost of stamps
- Allow at least one week for teacher/counselor completions before deadline
- Absolute deadline is October 31 or ASAP to Guidance.
- Note: All college applications and scholarships must go through Guidance!
