Activities
Students travel for four weeks and spend almost two of those weeks living with families and attending school with a host student. Additionally, students will visit museums, galleries, and other points of interest, take a boat ride in a Glow Worm Cave in New Zealand, snorkel in the Great Barrier Reef and have many opportunities to attend cultural events including a performance at the Sydney Opera House.
Participants
This opportunity is open to all RNE students in the Class of 2010, 2011, and 2012 who are in good academic and discipline standing. Under certain circumstances, students in the class of 2013 will be considered. Up to 20 students will be eligible to travel accompanied by 4 teachers (Sharon Owens, Bob Stutts, Kim Johnston, and Charles Vaughan).
Itinerary
Travel from Columbia to Los Angeles/San Francisco and on to Auckland, New Zealand. From there, the groups travels to Canberra, Cairns, Brisbane, and Sydney. The exact itinerary will be determined by school holidays in Australia, date of school release at RNE, and cost for flights within Australia. A final itinerary will be available in January 2010 when the ticket is officially booked.
Course Credit
A Social Studies half -elective is awarded based on the successful completion of class requirements- including presentations, Australian book review, and final class presentation.
Cost of the total experience
Final cost is dependent on arrangements that are made, value of the US$ against the AUS$ and number of participants. Estimated cost will be approximately $3500 to $3700. An interest deposit of $250 is required asap.
