Wintry Weather

We LOVE South Carolina Weather!

Our primary concern is your child’s safety.  With that in mind, we would like to share how we handle inclement weather and school opening, early dismissal, and late start.

Any time the possibility of winter weather occurs, the Richland Two District Office makes a determination at 6:30 in the morning as to whether or not school will open that day.

If school will be closed, it will be announced on major TV stations, radio stations, R2TV (channel 12 on Time/Warner cable) and will be noted on the district web site, www.richland2.org.

It is always faster to check the district web site for opening and closing times than to call the school.  We will be swamped with calls already!

They sometimes announce a Delayed Start (usually 2 hours.)  That means everything is delayed two hours except lunch and dismissal.  You may drop your child off no sooner than 9:30 and class would begin at 10:05.  School would still dismiss at 2:45.  No breakfast would be served, but lunch would be at the normal times.  Busses run two hours behind the normal pick-up, so send your child to the bus stop two hours after the normal pick-up time.  There is no Chirpers Early Bird Program on delayed start days.

If the weather changes during the day when school is in, they sometimes announce an early dismissal.  Again, all major TV and radio stations will announce this for Richland School District Two.  They will include the time dismissal begins.  There is no afterschool care (PLAYERS) any time we have early dismissal. This is very important in the case of children who ride busses or would normally stay for PLAYERS.  If your child is a bus rider or PLAYERS student, it is critical you discuss with them and send a note telling us how they will go home for early dismissal, even if it is still by bus!!!!  We do not want children going home to an empty house, so talk to your neighbors and/or family and have a plan.

 Important Points

*****Please make sure you listen to radio or TV on days when wintry weather is a  possibility.

***** It is faster to check the Richland 2 web site than to call the school.

Discuss with your child how you want them to go home if there is early dismissal if it is different from how they go home on a regular day.  Remember to notify the school by note or phone call if there is a change in transportation.

If there is early dismissal, please do not come to the front office to pick up your child.  Even if you are picking up before the dismissal time announced, report to the car rider area and the duty person will notify the front office your child needs to be dismissed.  We must keep the front drive open for bus transportation. We strongly suggest you not come earlier than the stated dismissal time.  This will help us prevent numerous interruptions to instruction and allow us to keep students focused.

Thank you for your help as we enjoy the fickle weather in South Carolina.  Following these procedures will help us get over 700 children home safely and efficiently!
