The role of the school library media program centers on providing exceptional service in three, interconnected areas. First among these areas is instruction. Exceptional school library media specialists are excellent teachers. They know their students, and they know the curriculum. Moreover, they not only have the necessary pedagogical abilities to teach information literacy skill but also the necessary managerial capabilities to make sure their programs are the heart of the school in terms of providing and supplementing instruction. To foster competence and stimulate interest in reading, viewing, and using information and ideas, as well as to meet the needs of individual students and the student body as a whole, the school library media specialist must partner with fellow educators. Through collaborative planning and teaching, as well as curriculum and collection mapping the school library media specialist should strive to be an integral part of school activities - a pillar of support to inquiry-based instruction. Secondly, I believe that every school library media specialist should build a collection that provides his or her students and staff access to quality academic and recreational materials as they strive to ensure that their patrons are effective users of ideas and information. For this to happen, intellectual and physical access to materials in a variety of formats is necessary, and the school library media center should be the first place students and teachers think of when they want or need information. Furthermore, the school library media specialist must design and tailor reading programs that fit their schools as they endeavor to develop, foster and cultivate the love of reading in all their patrons through a variety of services and programs. Lastly, the school library media specialist and the school library media program should be advocates for technology. It is no secret the impact technology can have when properly utilized in instruction. Many times classroom teachers are unaware of or simply don’t have the time to investigate current trends related to technology. Moreover, they are sometimes simply unwilling to try technology beyond simple word processing, thinking it too difficult, too time consuming. School library media specialists should serve as technology experts in terms of software and instructional use of technological equipment. As such they can demonstrate for teachers and students how to incorporate technology into their teaching and learning. |
