BAND: The bands at Kelly Mill are performance based. Each student learns technique, tone production, rhythms, teamwork, precision, creativity, and pride as he/she learns to perform on his/her instrument. Each student pays a $25 fee, which covers the required shirt for sixth graders, some instrument repairs, and some music purchases. Each student is responsible for his/her instrument purchase or rental. Students may be required to purchase theory and music books from local music stores. The uniform for band consists of the required shirt, black bottoms, and dark shoes. All the bands participate in a winter and spring concert.

Kelly Mill’s band program also has a parent-led booster club. The booster club raises funds and helps organize band trips. Meetings are held once a month.

CHORUS: Seventh and eighth grade students have the opportunity to audition for select chorus. This is a performing group of approximately 120 students. Classes meet every other day to prepare for concerts, clinics, and other performances. Appropriate vocal production, sight-reading skills using the sol-fege system and performance skills are taught. Grades are based upon daily participation, using correct posture, working for the good of the group as well as individual success, and weekly tests and quizzes. A uniform is required which consists of a Kelly Mill Chorus shirt with black bottoms and dark shoes. The cost of the shirt is included in the school fee. An additional cost for clinics and other trips may be incurred.

ORCHESTRA: Students in grades sixth through eighth are offered the opportunity to explore the musical arts through participation in our string orchestra program. Classes in violin, viola, cello, and bass are held daily for beginner, intermediate, and advanced string players. In addition to string fundamentals, students receive instruction in music history and theory and experience the teamwork and esprit-de-corps involved in preparing and performing public concerts.

Open enrollment into Band and Orchestra is at the sixth grade level. A child who moves into the district or who decides in a later school year that he/she wishes to join Orchestra must audition for a position.
