FIRST LEGO League

FIRST LEGO League (FLL) is an international program for children ages 9-14 (9-16 outside of the U.S. and Canada). It combines a hands-on, interactive robotics program and a research project presentation with a sports-like atmosphere. Teams consist of up to 10 members and focus on such things as team building, problem solving, creativity, and analytical thinking.  Practices include designing, constructing and programming the robot.  Practices also include conducting research on the Challenge topic and developing and practicing a creative presentation.  Practices do not include free-play with LEGOs.  At regional tournaments and at a state-wide competition in January, FLL teams compete in a friendly robotics event.

Junior FIRST LEGO League (JFLL) is geared to children aged 6 to 9 years old and utilizes a modified framework of FIRST LEGO League.  Teams of up to 5 children and an adult mentor receive a mini challenge, which is based on the FLL annual research project.  They will design a model depicting an aspect of the year’s Challenge on a 15” x 15” base plate and create a “Show Me” poster that depicts the teams’ experience during this process.  JFLL introduces children to the concepts of teamwork and basic design skills, creating an initial interest and hands-on approach to science and technology.
