Santa Lucia Classroom Visits

Mrs. Mosso-Taylor visits the classrooms
Students at Lake Carolina learn about Santa Lucia

Dear Parents/Guardians,

As you know, your child is learning about the many holiday celebrations around the world. I dressed as St. Lucia and visited your child’s class to talk to them about a special holiday in Sweden called, St. Lucia (Loo SEE ya) Day.

St. Lucia, also called St. Lucy, was known for her kindness and goodwill. We talked a lot about how we could be like St. Lucia and do good deeds and be kind to one another at home and at school. They all talked about how they were going to do something “extra special” tonight for their families!  St. Lucia Day is celebrated on December 13, 2008 with many festivities throughout the day. School children parade down the streets at night with lights and a St. Lucia Queen is named. The traditional clothing on this special day is for the girls to wear white dresses and red sashes or belts and for the boys to wear white shirt and pants. The oldest sister of each family wears a wreath of candles on her head and the boys carry star wands and wear cone shaped hats. The boys are called, “Star Boys”. One special thing that the boys and girls do for their parents is to wake up very early in the morning on St. Lucia Day and fix their parents breakfast. A favorite food is gingerbread or gingersnap cookies. I brought the children gingersnap cookies for them to taste and the majority of the children enjoyed them. Some thought they were, “a little spicy” :).

I thoroughly enjoyed visiting with each class. Please ask your child what they liked most about my visit and have them draw a picture or write to me. I would love to collect their drawings and writings to make a wonderful book.

                                                           Thanks so much,
